EMBEZZLEMENT FROM THE KAURI TIMBER COMPANY.

From the “ Sydney Evening News ” of February 17th we clip the following : “ Albert Ernest Harrison, 22, oil remand, was charged before Mr C. Delobery, S.M,, at the Central P. Court y r esterday with having embezzled sums of money amounting to £4lO 15s 9d, the property of the Kauri Timber Company. Mr Stinson appeared for the company, and Mr T. M. Williamson for the defence. Accused when arrested by Sergeant Parkinson made no reply to the charge. Robert Walker, manager for the company, stated that accused was in the employ of the company as shipping clerk, and it was part of his duty to collect accounts. The sum of £34 17s 6d was collected and not accounted for. James M’Phee, accountant, in the employ of the company, stated that he had not received the £34 17s 6d in question on or after January 4th. The total deficiency was £4lO 15s 9d. Mr R. E. Pownall, of the Treasury, stated that he had paid accused £34 17s 6d on behalf of the company, and had paid him various other sums. Evidence was given that accused cashed the cheque for £34 at Messrs Potts and Paul’s warehouse. Accused was committed for trial at the quarter sessions, bail being allowed, himself in £SOO and two sureties of £250 each, or one in £500.”
