HOW DO PEOPLE IN AUCKLAND LIVE ?

Mr Porter, President of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, in his address to the members at the Annual meeting says—‘'lt is often remarked, “ How do pieople in Auckland live ?’ A careful perusal of Auckland’s position will give a satisfactory reply to this. In Auckland the number of separate holding's is 9,824, being an increase for the year of 1,234. This increase is more than that of any other two provincial districts during the same period, and is 529 greater than Otago, which, for many years, has had the largest number of holdings. The number of horned cattle in the Auckland Provincial District is 196,445, being 45,314 more than that of any other provincial district. The number of breeding cows is 70,060, as against 54,658. This also is very much in. favour of Auckland- There is, also, an increase in the total area under cultivation of 91.569 acres oyer the returns of IS9I. The orchards in the colony comprise 19,627 acres, being an increase for the year of 2,50.@ acres. The increase for the Auckland district was 1,301 acres. Of this 19,627 acres Auckland possesses no less than 8,844 acres, or about 45 per cent of the orchards of the colony. The table of imports will show that Auckland was £24,000 above any of the other ports, thus showing that in imports Auckland is the first port in the colony, and. is not so far behind the other ports in exports, especially when the class of exports is taken into consideration.”
