PASSING NOTES.
[By Nemesis.] There is always a centralising influence at work at Dargaville like there is at Wellington. Many unthinking people have an idea that Wellington is the largest city of our colony because so much is centred there; and so, too, the importance of the Dargaville township is very much over-estimated by many for very similar reasons. The races, sports, regattas, and pubs of that place are all utilised mainly for gathering money and Dargaville towhship is more dependent on the surrounding district than any other of our townships. Other settlements by their industries are producing wealth and drawing money to the district from outside. From this It will be seen that the chief contributors to our prosperity are the settlements outside Dargaville, and, seeing that this is the case, any attempt to centralise must act prejudicially to the district. The s. s. Ethel HOW runs up river to Tangileroria and I have no doubt but that after a little perseverance she will secure a profitable trade. But why should she stop at Dargaville P Surely Ara tapu, Kopuru, and down-river people in general have some claim, and should not borequired to journey up to Kaihia to meet the steamer for a trip up, or their friends on coming down.
