ARAPOHUE.
(From our own Correspondent.) A meeting of our Agricultural Society was called for Thursday last ; but at the hour appointed only the president, secretary and two members put in an appearance The evening was wet however up to the time when many would he leaving, and it was also a moonless night, this may have deterred some from coming It is very evident that if more are to be induced to attend, the meetings will have to he held in a more central locality. The meejings should be held monthly at regular periods, There is evi
dcntlv very little enthusiasm so far aroused in regard to the Society. The meetings were convened at Mititai for the greater convenience of those coming from the other side of the river ; but at the last meeting not one attended from across the river. A meeting is to be called for tha 2nd of February, and should a sufficient number not attend the Society will be wound up. There was quite a stir at Mititai last week owing to the unexpected arrival of a family numbering (11) eleven in all ; and when the cargo boat arrived at nearly 5 o'clock, all the familj- goods had to be landed and drawn out to the back Mr Buchanan took an immense load out on a sleigh with bullocks. Mr Bradley also came down with his waggon and carried part of the family out to the school, Mr Burton the new arrival, intends trying settling on a section of land lying between Roskell's and Raymond's, and intends erecting a dwelling at once, The family have for the present found comfortable quarters in Mr Simpkin’s old house. Mr Burton has for years been employed at the timber mills in Auckland ; and he informs me there is great competition among those in the trade there, the consequence being that the employees are cut iu their wages, Men in the yard receiving os per day.
