PORT ALBERT.
[from our own correspondent. The quarterly meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society, for the election of 'officers, was held on Saturday, January 7th ; (here was a large attendance of members and friends. The president occupied the chair and called on the secretary to read the minutes of the last, meeting, which were passed ns read ; the secretary’s report for the quarter was also read and showed the Society to be in a flourishing condition. The election of officers was then proceeded with and resulted in the following being duly elected : President, L P. Beecroft ; Vice - Presidents, Messrs J. Shepherd and R. IValker; Secretary, O. Holler ; Assistant Secretary, Mr D. Prictor ; Treasurer Miss Gubb ; Committee, Mrs D. Beecroft and Mr C. Judd ; Auditors, Miss Steven ton and Mr P. Utting The foregoing business having been concluded, a start was made with the following programme, which was the best we have had for some time: —Instrumental duett (violin and harmonium), Miss Plummer and Mr Prictor (very good) ; Headings by Mrs W. Hefford and Mr A. Gubb ; Song, Mr !,. P, Beecroft ; and a trio by Messrs D, and L. P. Bc-ecroft and Miss Plummer ; the latter was a real treat. The three-masted schooner Devenport left for Sydney a full ship ; she has on hoard 250.000 feet of sawn and baulk timber. We are glad to see a revival in tho timber trade ; the local mill has been working through the holidays, which is one good sign. Great preparation is being made for the Band of Hope anniversary to be held on the 24th of this month. There are to he games for the children, games for the fathers, games for the mothers, tea imder the spreading willow trees, then a concert in tho evening—and all this for a colonial Robert J During the last week there were to have been three or four meetings held, but 1 the flood gates of heaven were opened and it rained-—’ I was going to saj- for forty days and nights, but it did not I am thankful to say. though it did rain for fouidays aud nights and 1 Your Own ’ had to be in it all, so that is the reason last week’B budget was so small. The Port Albert Cricket Club are sending a team over lo Warkworth to try conclusions with the cricketers on that side, when we hope to see them return victorious.
