Over and over again the North has been styled as “the npjrlected,” and not without reason. Of the cry has not been so often repeated, nor indeed can it be with justice. Since the North became represented in Parliament by residents within its own boundary a little more attention has been paid to it, and for this a good deal of credit is due to the energy and determination of the present member for Marsden. Mr Houston, too, for so young a politician, has been fairly successful in his calls upon Government ; but he is a comparative stranger to the Hcbson County and upon that County has now in truth descended the term, “ the neglected ” County, To ensure attention it seems absolutely necessary to have a parliamentary representative resident in the districx A recent proof of the neglect of this County may he seen by a glance at the list of new appointments of Justices of the Peace for the Auckland district. There it will be seen that six or seven appointments have been made in the Bay of Islands and Mongonui counties but none in the Hobson County. It cannot be. said that this county is well supplied for our Maropin correspondent recently drew attention to the need of a justice in that part, and at Aratapu considerable difficulty is often experienced in securing the attendance of two justices.
The Aratapu Rechabite Anniversary has been fixed for Friday, February 10th. Rev J. Berry describes betting as “ a scientific theft that is the leading amuse menu of thousands of leading Christians.” The £ Marsden Times,’ which had been published in Wangarei for over a year past, has c ased publication. The wharf at Rhodes’ mill is now completed and the brig 1 Prospero is there dis - charging ballast. Everything is now in readiness at th : s mill for the cutting of timber and loading of vessels. Two choral services were held in the Davgaville Church on Sunday, The choir acquitted themselves extremely well and the. attendances were good. Rev. R G. Boler led the service in the evening Three W airoa cricketers played for Manakau County against the Auckland United C.C. on Monday, namely, T, Elliott, Forcle and J. Elliott. They made six runs between thorn. The game which was played in the Domain was won by tin United Club by 28 runs on the first innings. The Wesleyan services at Aratapu on Sunday were concluded by Rev, J, Blight in the morning and Mr F. Matthews in the evening. In the morning there was also a christening. One or two families are camped on the coast, but the majority of persons there on Monday had come out on horseback or in vehicles for a day’s fun and pleasure. Twenty thousand copies or the Xmas number of the N. Z, Graphic have bean sold out, and no more are to be bad. Several in this district who have hot n asking tor copies will be disappeiuted. The Xmas gift picture has been struck off on superior paper for training and can still he procured. The Te Kopuru people gave the children a pleasant turn out on Monday in the form of a picnic. The weather was just beautiful and a large number went down in the s.s. Kopuru to Tokatoka where the usual games and fun were indulged in to the de» light of all. Strawberries were plentiful and the scenery and surroundings new so that time passed only too quickly. Mr McJDougal of Tatarariki has had a good run on bis strawberries. One gentleman with a remarkably good appetite informed us that ior one shilling he was allowed to eat as much as he liked, and even when he was dead beat ho was told th.ro were plenty more and pressed to try again. By the sparkle in Lis eye we could see that he had evidently had full satisfaction . Some of the shop decorations at Darga—ville on Saturday last were very pretty indeed, In the early morning Mr Walter’s well stocked butcher’s shop was a picture of clealiness and neatness. Beef, turkeys, geese, fowls etc., being very tastefully arranged, and two bullock’s heads set the whole off very appropriately. Mr N. Moros also had a good display in bis window suitable to the season. The Mititai telephone is now bring taken in hand and will be accomplished in about two months’ time. It is proposed that the cable shall cross the river from about the Kopuru parsonage to Mr Dodd’s property. Mr Orcbiston, Inspector of telegraphs, was in the district recently and has left instructions for the pushing on of ihe work. The cable will be brought up by the 11 mein oa on her next trip, about two months bonce. The Mititai settlers subscribed a guarantee several months back and consider that it is time something was done. The Kauri’s Company’s mills have been too busy to close down for the holidays and they have only had one day’s spellThere seems to be no prospect of holidays for they have two vessels waiting for cargoes and more expected. The barque Albatross is now about loaded and will leave Kopuru next week. The Norwegian barque Dolly ar • rived at Aratapu on Monday and the brig Prospero on Tuesday, The Annie Wilson finished loading on Tuesday. The brigantine M. A. Doran arrived at Tatarariki mill on Monday.
A choral service was held in the Aratapu church on tire afternoon of Christmas Day. The choir were present in full force and Jackson’s Te Deurn Laudamus and J übilata Deo were well rendered, Tire altos sang with more confidence and spirit than on the occasion of the former service. Rev. Boler conducted the service and there was a very fair congregation. The evening service was conducted by Mr G, E, Smith the attendance being moderate. The singing on both occasions was very good. The decorations were exceedingly pretty and neat and reflected great credit on the decorators, The advent of Mr Gerring and his family has been of great advantage to this church in several ways. The Arapobue Ladies’ Leap Year Social was held on Wednesday in the Hall, The place was well filled and everyone was happy, Messrs Jowitt, Ringrose, F. Molloy, J. Colmar, French and J. Young all assisted in providing music. Miss Rhodes also played an extra. Misses N. Bradley and E. Masefield were the AT.O’s. Several ladies and gentlemen were present from Aratapu and Te Kopum. The visitors from these places were willing to walk down t.o the river in the early morning' so that the Arapobue ladies might ride home without waiting,'but Mr S. Bradley was determined that ‘ Bob Barker ’ should not have to walk down while bis waggon waavailable. ‘ God bless Bob Barker ’ was the response that came from the roads.
