PORT ALBERT.

[from our own correspondent.! The Mutual Improvement Class met for the usual meeting on Saturday, Dec. 10th, hut owing to a counter attraction in the shape of the circus, the attendance was much smaller than it might have been ; however, there was a nice little meeting,- which was very much enjoyed. Mr G. T. Hartnell, the vice-president,, occupied the chair, a.nd the following programme was rendered : Reading, ‘ The Modesty of Women ’ by Miss Hartnell ; Instrumental music, Misses Hartnell and Gubb ; Reading from Dickens, Mrs P. Beecroft; Recitation, Mr G. T- Hartnell ; Impromptu speech, Mr R. Walker. A special meeting of shareholders in the Temperance Hall was held on Mlonday, Hec. 12th, in the Hall, to consider the advisability of altering some of the rules and by-laws. Mr J. Shepherd was voted to the chair and he called on the secretaty to read the notice convening the meeting ; he also invited the mover of certain notices of motions to give his reasons for the proposed alterations The principal alteration suggested was the giving of one vote for every paid-up share, but after a warm discussion it was decided that for every share held, one vote be allowed the holder, for four shares, two votes, and for eight shares three votes, that to be the limit. The next alteration proposed was that any shareholder holding less than five votes be not elegible for election as Trustee. This proposition caused quite a long discussion, but on being put to the meeting, eleven voted against and seven for ; it was therefore lost. We had a visit from the Bernard Circus Troupe, but this sort of thing is entirely out of our line, and consequently the attendance was only moderate.
