ORIGINAL POETRY.

ON BOARD THE ALBA.TROS. On Wairoa's placid breast. Floats the ‘Albat.ros’ at rest. From her deck you hear the patter Of trippling feet and merry clatter. Dusky forms flit to and fro In the pate lamp’s fitful glow ; In darkest corners here and there You will find a flirting pair. Halo of romance so sweet Lurks about this quaint retreat, Misty gleam of flag and fern Greets the eye at every turn. Soft cheeks flush, and bright eyes glance In the wierd and ghostly dance ; Reminding one of Macbeth’s witches — With this difference —these bewitch us. ‘The ball goes on,’ the Captain says As he the festive scene surveys ; Then give three cheers for our genial host, The worthy Captain of the Albatross. Daphne Kopuru, December 17th, 1892.
