C ORRESPONDENCE

[The editor is not responsible for opinions expressed by correspondents.] TO THE EDITOB. Sir, —The thanks of the settlers in this district are due to you for the sensible remarks which you made in your issue of Friday last, respecting the ‘ lawless gumdiggers’ who have infested this neighbourhood in such large numbers this season. They have proved an intolerable nuisance, for apart from their thieving, licentiousness, and abusive language when spoken to on account of their trespassing and depredations, the loss of time and extra work to prevent damage by their fires when burning off the scrub, and to repair damage done wilfully to notice boards, boundary posts etc., to protect young trees and prevent the few which remain after the continual burning, from being cut down for tent-poles etc., interferes very much with the proper cultivation of the land. I have no personal knowledge of the lawyer who appeared for the defence, but, presuming him to possess some of the high qualities of his illustrious name-sake, the Norman AlcLeod of “ Good Words,” ha is much to be pitied for the necessity he was undei of setting up such quibbling, paltry, pettifogging pleas for the accused, just as though a leaseholder had not the same rights as an owner during the currency of the lease ; else in the Perpetual Lease, after the description of the property ; what is the meaning of the words “ Together with the rights, easements and appurtenances to the same belonging- ?’—l am, Sir. Settler.
