PORT ALBERT INDDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

The Port Albert Art and Industrial Exhibition was opened on Thursday, December. Ist. Long before the appointed time groups of horsemen and carriages were to be seen making their way to the scene of festivities. The proceedings were considerably enlivened by the presence of the Paparoa Brass Band, who graciously offered their services and added considerably to the attractions of the Exhibition : fully 300 people attended. The exhibits were of a ohoice collection, and both in number and variety were an improvement, upon those of previous years ; the needle and fancy work especially were very good and. would have reflected credit upon older heads than those which executed them. The judges took great pains in making their awards, and the Hall was not thrown open to the public till after three o’clock. The awards, I think, were satisfactory to all parties, with one or two exceptions. The evening's entertainment was provided by the Band and was very much appreciated by the audience ; the providing for the inner man was entrusted to Mrs Hartnell, and Miss Beecroft, and they with their army of assistants satisfied all wants in that respect. During the evening the energetic secretary, Mr G. T. Hartnell, who has been tbe moving spirit of the affair and who has left no stone unturned to secure a success, made a short speech in which he thanked the judges and band, and called upon Mr Glover to say a few words, which that gentleman did, creating a favourable impression amongst his hearers. Mr Ilichardson, of the Auckland Musical Budget, had a specially made piano on exhibition and it was an object of much admiration ; it is for sale, price £45. I enclose the prize list which, however, is not quite complete, as the drawings and sketches are to be sent to Auckland to be adjudicated on by Mr Peyton, there being a dif ficulty in procuring local judges. Some o£ tho drawings by our local artist, Mr Mauder, of a few of the leading sights of the district, attracted quite a lot of admirers, and the verdict of competent judges was that they were very good. The secretary is to he congratulated upon tho success of the exhibition, and the members of the committee are also entitled to a share of the credit. SCONES, FLOWERS, VEGETABLES, AND PASTRY.
