GUMDIGGERS ’ GRIEVANCES.

The perennial question of gumdiggers’ grievances will shortly be brought before Parliament in the form of a petition. A number of the Knights of the Spade and Spear are approaching the House with a request that legislation be passed enabling them to sell gum by tire pound instead of by the hundredweight, as at present. They lose largely through not being credited with odd quantities. They also ask that gum dealers should be compelled to keep proper and reliable scales, and that police constables be inspectors of weights. Another request is that hotelkeepers should be allowed to deal in kauri gum. The petition being informal, has been sent back by Mr Palmer to be put in proper shape. Nearly half the petitions presented to Parliament this session have been informal many of them drawn by lawyers, being vitiated by declar ations or affidavits being made on the back of the petition, instead of being sent attached. Ignorance of the proper form is hardly excusable in any person residing in the North, as Brett’s Almanac has for several years contained a correct example of the form of Parliamentary petitions.
