Our Port Albert correspondent refers to the Baulk timber question and thinks that the matter should not be allowed to drop. He raises some points in favour of allowing things to go on as they are. Will some of those interested please take upon themselves to answer his arguments ; if no one else will we shall have to do so ourselves. William Holford, alias W. Walker, who was apprehended by Constable Scott at Aratapu, appeared at the Auckland Police Court on Saturday to answer to a charge of having on or about the Ist June last,, been guilty of larceny as a bailee of the sum of sGSS, belonging to James Fowler.
Mr Thomas Cotter appeared for the accused, who was remanded until Friday, the St!) inst.
A meeting of the creditors in the estate of If. Campbell was held in Messrs E. Mitcheison and Bros, office yesterday. The following creditors were present: —Mr F. W. Matthews for Messrs Brown Campbell and Co., Mr W. A Marnner, Mr .James McCranh and Mr J. Mitciielson for Messrs E. Mitcheison and Bros. Mr J. Mitcheison in the chair. Mr Matthews proposed and Mr Marriner seconded that the meeting- be adjourned until the p Ist inst, and that the chairman write to the .Debtor asking him to be present with a statement of his affairs- Adjourned accordingly Our account of the daring exploits of our sportsmen on the Ist of April is crowded out this week, also a letter from ‘ Bunkum ’ on Mr Crookes’ explanation to the Board. Two charges were heard at Aratapu this morning before Messrs T. Webb and M. Harding- J ? s 15.I 5 . Albin McAskie was sentenced to 21 days for obscene language and Alexander McTCer.zic’was fined 20swith 23s costs for disorderly conduct. Full particulars will appear next week The Aratapu Band of Hope have agreed to give up the use of their room every alternate Tuesday for the meetings of a Mutual Improvement Class and all those desirous of assisting in the formation and carrying: on of such a Society are invited to meet on Tuesday evening next at 7.30 mill time.
The final Bifle match for the Martini Henri trophy given by Mrs Dargaville was fired on Saturday last. Mr 11. Haswell is the lucky winner of the prize ; Ids shooting throughout the many contests has been very good. Last Saturday he just managed to win from Mr MeNaughton who had a handicap of ten points from him. His actual score w s t>3 which bis handicap made into 6b points. Mr Haswell won the two last matches as well as a previous one, The Bank of New Zealand authorities have at last yielded to the necessities of - this end of the district and have decided to open a branch office at Aratapu from Thursday next. An advertisement appears elsewhere informing the public that the Branch will be open for the transaction of business every Thursday at Aratapu, and at Dargaville on the other five days of the week : the Mangawliare office to be closed. We are informed that more than one half of the deposits are made from this end of trio-river and it may probably happen that before” long, one day will be found to be insufficient for the requirements of this end of the district, ihe books must of course be kept in one place and this necessitates the greater part of the time being spent there.
