MATAHIWI SCHOOL PICNIC.
A HAPPY GATHERING. The annual picnic of the Matahiwi School was held on Saturday in a paddock kindly lent by Mr. J. Maxwell There’ was a full a’ttendaneq of the children, who with their parents and friends had an enjoyable day's outing. Much of the success of the gathering was due to Miss Edwards (the teacher). Mr. A. Scott (the chairman), Mr. J. and ether members of th 3 committee, besides a band of willing lady helpers. Each child attending the school received a handsome prize, anj the small children of the district a toy each. Justice was done to the good things provided through the usual generosity of the settiers of the district, and town helpers, whom the. committee wish to thank heartily.- A programme of sports was staged.’ Mr. J. Maxwell acted as handicapper and starter. Some exciting finishes were witnessed. Following is the list of prize winners:— Senior boys: Colin Scott 1, Norman Carswell 2.

Ladies’ three-legged race: Miss D. Hartley and Miss G. ‘.Field 1; Miss L. Clarke and Miss E. Amundsen 2.
Boys’ shoe race: A. Amundsen 1, N. Carswell 2.
Young men’s race: M. Jones 1, S. Amundsen 2.
Married ladies’ race: Mrs. A. Carswell 1, Mrs. F. Clarke 2, Mrs. A. Scott Boys’ tyre race: N. Carswell 1, A. Amundsen 2. Boys’ hurdle race: N." Carswell 1, A. Amundsen 2. Junior girls’ and boys’ shoe race: Daphne Taggart 1, Frank Ellison 2. Relay race: Nathaniel Clarke and Miss E. Amundsen 1, Maxwell Jones and Miss D. Hartley 2. Chain stepping: M. Jones and J. Ellison, tie, 1; Miss Ivy Maxwell 2. Tyre race i Allan Amundsen 1, Colin Scott 2. Little tots: M. Carswell 1, J. Evans 2. Junior school children: Harry Ellison 1, Daphne Taggart 2, Dorothy Field 3. Relay race: D. Parker and’ Miss E. Amundsen 1, M. Jones and Miss G Field 2.' Married men’s race: A. Scott 1. R Boyce 2. Hare chase: Daphne Taggart 1. A dance, held in the school in the evening, was largely attended. Mr. P. Hancock supplied the music and extras were played by Miss L. Clarke. Mr. A. Scott was M.C.
