DUNEDIN LANDMARK GONE. THE OLD CHORAL HALL. DUNEDIN, March 16. A big blaze occurred in the city tonight, shortly after 7.30, while' the streets were still thronged with people who had turned out on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of York, the old Choral Hall, an ancient landmark in Moray Place,, being completely gutted. The building was occupied for some time as a clothing and robe factory by Butterworth Bros., the under floor being occupied by F. B. Francis and Co., land agents.
For some time the water made little impression on the fire, but at 8.20 p.m. the deluge of water had gained the mastery leaving the inside of the building a gutted, smouldering mass. The building was owned by the trustees of the B'ajVor Estate and is insured for £2OOO. The contents of Butterworth’s factory were insured, but tho amount was not ascertainable to-night.—(P.A.)
