ATTACK ON NANKING.
GREAT BATTLE IN PROGRESS. tor ■
AN ALL NATIONS NAVY.
(Received This Day, 0.5 a.m.)
SHANGHAI, March 16,
Practically the entire Cantonese Army is concentrating on the attack on Nanking. The theatre of war has thus been shifted a hundred miles north of Shanghai. The Cantonese are reported to be within thirty miles of Nanking and heavy fighting is progressing. The direct menace to Shanghai is temporarily removed, but the authorities are net relaxing their precautions and preparations. Fifty Spanish bluejackets were landed yesterday and five hundred French Colonial infantry from Indo China are due shortly. Never in history has there been silch an international assembly of navies as is now in Shanghai Harbour. Every nation owning a navy is represented. The congestion is added to by idle merchantmen.—(A.and N.Z ).
