BAKERS’ AWARD.
THE ARBITRATION COURT HEARING. SHORTER HOURS AND HIGHER PAY SOUGHT. WELLINGTON, March 16. The Dominion bakers’ and pastrycooks’ dispute was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day. The points in dispute concerned hours and wages. The employees asked for a 44-hour week and the employers sought a 48-hour week. The union also asked that the hour for starting work for bakers and assistants (except dough-makers) should not be earlier than 4 a.m., and that the hours’of starting work for pastrycooks and their assistants should not be earlier than 6 a.m. The following increases in the rates of pay were sought: Foreman baker or pastrycook. £5 7/6 to £7; journeymen, £4 17s 6d to £6; bakers’ labourers, £3 18s to £5. Two weeks’ annual holidays were sought in place of one. The Court, after hearing evidence from both parties, reserved its decision.—(P.A.)
