EVILS OF DEFORESTATION.
WATER SUPPLY AFFECTED. b POSITION ON TARARUA MOUNTAINS. Reference was made by Mr. W. Kemp last evening at the annual meeting Masterton Beautifying .Society, to the effect of the destruction of bush on the borough’s watercatchment area on tho Tararua mountains. Following on deforestation, rain ’ now quickly passed away from tho hills and was not retained as formerly "was the case when the bush stood. A loan proposal for a more constant supply would shortly bo placed before the ratepayers,,but it appeared to him that even if they went higher up the river they would still meet with tho same trouble. A great danger to tho water supply of the borough hinged on the destruction of the bush. The first thing that should be done was to reefforest the area to conserve tho watersupply of the district. Tho president (Dr. Archer Hosking) observed that he had watched tho position for some time. Year after year, he acres of bush disappeared. It was a crying shame, and a barren range would result. If the area were enclosed, added Dr. Hosking, tho native bush would re-appear.
