LOCAL ELECTIONS
’ MR. T. JORDAN TO STAND AGAIN. r — COUNCIL CANDIDATES. HARBOUR, HOSPITAL AND POWER BOARDS. At the request of a meeting of representative ratepayers, at which full appreciation was expressed of the work done hy the Mayor and other members of the Borough Council during the two-year term which expires next month, Mr. T. * Jordan has consented to allow him, self to be nominated for a further term as Mayor. Several of the retiring councillors have expressed their willingness to stand again, and at least two new candidates are definitely in the field.
The meeting of ratepayers abovementioned passed a resolution placing on record its appreciation of the eonduct of the borough business during the past two years by the Mayor and his council. The Mayor’s manner <rf representing Masterton on public occasions as well as the careful conduct of public business, the resolution stated, is regarded as a distinct success, resulting in considerable benefit to the town, and evidence of the eordiaT relations existing between the executive officers and borough employees is shown by the good work efficiently done. It was unanimously agreed to approach Mr. Jordan and request him to aeeept nomination for a further term of office. On being approached by represents fives appointed at the meeting, Mr. Jordan took time to consider his decision. In promising to give the request of the delegation his earnest considers tion, he said that if returned as Mayor for a further term he would expect greater support from the citizens of the town than he had had in the past. He expressed his disappointment at the lack of interest the majority of electors had displayed in matters vitally affecting their welfare. Subsequently Mr. Jordan conveyed to the representatives of fhe ratepayers’ meeting that he would allow himself to be nominated for a further term. With Mr. A. Rippoa definitely in the field as a mayoral candidate, an election Wil be necessary, as was the case at the last municipal eleetions two years ago. So far as is known at present, ail the retiring councillors with the exception of Cr. E. F. Barton, will stand »sain- Councillors W. S. Heaps and T. 8. Jenkins are undecided, but have expressed th«nselvea as being willing to again undertake the work if they can find the time. Mr. J. W. Andrews, who formerly occopied a seat on the council, and who was largely responsible for the reorganisation of the works department, was invited by the meeting of ratepayers Io stand again. Mr. Andrews, however, informed an “Age” representative last evening that he had definitely declined the invitation. Mr. K. Russell, who formerly sat on the council and retired to take a trip to England, stated yesterday that ha was prepared to again place his services at the disposal of the ratepayers. As we mentioned yesterday, Mr. J. L. Murray has also decided to stand for the council. It was learned from an authoritative source that Labour interests would bo represented by two nominees for certain, and three if another candidate -could be prevailed upon to stand. ELECTION ARRANGEMENTS. The elections will take place on Wednesday, April 27, and the nominations for mayor, councillors and various other local body positions close on Wednes day, April 13. Owing to the pending gazetting of regulations abolishing the ward system in the Masterton borough, the councillors, but not the Mayor, automatically retire with the publishing of the notice. The position is therefore actually an extraordinary vacancy for each seat, but to obviate the expense of two elections, the present council deferred jetion on the abolishing of the wards so that the official consent and retirement of the council would coincide with the usual elections. On the same day (April 13), nominations close for the borough representatives on the Wairarapa Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and the Wairarapa Electric Power Board, and district representatives on the Wellington Harbour Board. Mrs. W. H. Jackson and Messrs. E. G. Eton and J. C. Ewington are the present representatives on the Hospital Board, Messrs. T. Jordan and H. J. King on the Power Board, and Messrs. T. Moss and T. E. Barker on the Harbour Board. The local area of representation on the last mentioned body includes ejght counties, six boroughs and one town board, situated m the Wairarapa and Masterton electorates, and part of the Pahiatua electorate.
