FEATHERSTON.
(“The Age” Special.)
The funeral took place at Featherston on Tuesday of the late Richard Kelly, who died on Sunday night. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Bev. Father Hagerty. The pall bearers were, Messrs. J. W. Card, Colin Campbell, R. Flynn, R. Pattern, R. Seivers and R. Kearney. The deeeased leaves a widow, one sop, Mr. P. Kelly, and a daughter, Mrs. Kearney (Lower Hutt).
Although the weather was rather •hangeable, a very enjoyable afternoon was spent by all who attended *hen the Greytown Croquet Club was entertained by the Featherston Club on Wednesday. Afternoon tea was provided by the members and some good matches were played, the results being as follows (Greytown names mentioned first): —Mesdames Stephens and Brunton beat Mrs. Wickcnk and Mr. Saunders, 26/16; Mesdames Brookes and Anker lost to Mesdames McKenzie and Warren. 26/16; Mesdames Viles and Haigh lost to Mesdames Ayre and Combs, 17/26; Mesdames Thomson and Stephens v. Mesdames Fairbrother and Williams, and Mesdames Hodge and Humphries v. Mesdames Holland and O ’Brien unfinished. PIRINOA. (“The Age” Special.) The death occurred at Kohunui on Thursday of Terena, wife of Mr. J. R, Te VVhaiti. The deceased, who was highly esteemed by all who knew her, had been ailing for a short time and her sudden demise came as a shock to her many friends. The funeral, which took place on Sunday, was largely attended, Mr. and Mrs. Guy Gillies are spending. a holiday at Pelorus Sounds. Captain and Mrs. Bird have returned from the French Pass.
Large hauls of eels are being caught at the Lake Ferry. ,It is understood that the Pirinoa. Sports Club intend holding their annual sports meeting on April 2, but so far a meeting has not been called to make the initial arrangements. Several members of the local rifle club competed at the Papawai meeting and were successful in gaining a fair proportion of the prize money. Mr. George Busch has decided to enter the ranks -of racehorse owners, and has placed in the care of a Featherston trainer a gelding of his own breeding. It is proposed to give the horse— appropriately named My Relation—a try-out at the coming Trentham meeting.
Mr. Gordon Suthcrlnnd, who has not been in the best of health for some time, is spending a holiday in tiie Auckland district.
Dipping operations are in full swing in this district.
It will be some time before an attempt is made to open the outlet of the Wairarapa Lake, as there is not sufficient water, to make a successful opening. . Provided a spell of wet weather sets in there is little chance of an attempt being made before the end of April.
Mrs. and Miss Mollie Hume have returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs. Matthews, of Porirua, has returned home, after a short visit to her son, Mr. Victor Saunders.
A local taxi-proprietor had the misfortune a few days ago to meet with an accident, which rendered his car hors de combat. He was returning from Wellington, where his car had been completely overhauled. Thera were no passengers on the car. Tho lorry was only slightly damaged, but the car was a complete wreck, especially the front portion.
