WEST END IMPROVEMENTS.
OPEN AREA OFFERED.
PLANTING OF COLLEGE STREET.
An offer was made by Mr. W. Nopa last evening to the Masterton Bcautilying Society regarding the bcautifieation of College Street, a new road recently formed from Pownall Street ta the upper end of Renall Street and the dedication to the society, on certain conditions, of an area on the north aide of Renall Street, adjacent to the railway line.
Mr. Nops stated in a letter that he had on Tiand about 100 trees for planting in College Street. The footpaths of the street were being made 16 feet wide, eight feet of which was to be sanded and the remaining eight feet (alongside the kerbing) reserved fot! tree planting and grassing. If the sowing down in graft was recommended and done with the tree-planting, he would make a donation up to £2O to the society for the purpose of tarrying out the work.
Regarding a triangular section, having B frontage of about ninety links tq Renall Street, Mr. Nops statM that it would be advantageous if the ares were protected to the public before it changed hands. He was prepared to fence off the area from the remaining lot and dedicate it to the society, provided the society laid out the land in an ornamental garden, and it was not used for the purposes of a tip or depository of rubbish. In the event of the society taking the piece of land the work was to be done early in the forthcoming season.
After a brief discussion it was decided. to refer the matter to a subcommittee to gather further particulars concerning the work and report to the executive. Messrs G. Selby, A. W. Reynolds and W. Kemp were set up as a committee.
