MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
MAYORALTY AND BOROUGH COUNCIL
LIST OF COUNCILLORS INCOMPLETE. AIR. J. L. MURRAY TO STAND. The municipal elections arc to take place on. April 27, .and not many weeks have' now to elapse before the closing of nominations. So far as the Masterton Borough Council is concerned, no very definite development has yet taken place. V ith regard to the Mayoralty although the present Mayor (Air. T. Jordan) has not thus far made any announcement of his intentions, the general anticipation is that there will be a straight-out contest between Mr. Jordan and his opponent at last election, Mr. A. Rippon.
Little more can be said about the Borough Council than that there will be in any ease some changes in its membership. At present there is one vacancy on the council due to the retirement of Mr. Rippon. Another councillor, Air. E. F. Barton, informed an “Age” representative last evening Jhat he would not be seeking re-elec-tion. There are thus definitely two vacancies to be filled, and some other members of the council have indicated that they arc not over-eager to- seek reelection.
The only new candidate who is definitely in the field is Mr. J. L. Murray. Mr. Murray has agreed to stand at the request of citizens who believe that his business experience and allround qualifications will make him a decided acquisition to the council.
Several other names have been mentioned as those of possible candidates, but in most cases the individuals concerned appear not to have finally made up their minds.
It is understood that the question of nominating two Labour candidates for the council has been mooted. The matter is believed to be under the consideration of local Labour organisations, but no candidates have as yet actually been selected.
TWO WEEKS FOR ENROLMENT. Under the statutory process of revisits, about three hundred names were struck off the Borough electoral roll, and the applications for enrolment thus far received fall short of making good this deficiency. A number of canvassers are new at work, however, on behalf of the opposing groups interested in the prospective half-holiday poll, and it is anticipated that a considerable stimulus will thus be given to enrolment. The supplimentary roll is to close on March 31.
