THE ROYAL TOUR

DUKE OF YORK’S* RECEPTION IN CHRISTCHURCH.

GREAT CHILDREN’S DISPLAY.

INDUSTRIES INSPECTED.

CHRISTCHURCH. March 14.

Profound disappointment was felt in Christchurch when it became known that the Duchess of York had to abandon. her Southern tour, but. in the ab-

sence of the Duchess, the city has taken the Duke to its heart and he must have been delighted with the magnificent reception. He has several times appeared on. the balcony at Warner’s and waved a friendly greeting to the crowd below patiently waiting to see him at eiose quarters. The Christchurch crowds have been remarkably well behaved, and the police have had no* difficulty in keeping perfect order. The feature of to-day’s programme was the jvonderful display, given by children on the Addington Showgrounds. It attracted a crowd of many thousands. Tiiere were engaged in it altogether about nine thousand children, of whom some 1500 «r 1600 ’specially selected school children gave a most interesting and graceful exhibition of physical exercises to the music of a band. The Duke was early astir this morning, and macle an inspection of Christchurch industries. He first visited a brushTmaking factory, where he was presented with a pair of brushes. He was interested in the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills, where in each department as he entered the workers rase and cheered. The Duke was presented with a travelling rug for himself and another for the Duchess, also a pair of snow-white blankets. A wool store and Aulsebiook’s were also visited. In the afternoon, the Duke went fishing, and this evening he attends a Citizens’ Ball -(PA.)
