SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.

(‘‘The Age” Special.)

On account of the military camp being held there will be no evening run of the Carterton Amateur Athletic Club this week.

Fruit-growing. The Greytown Fruitgrowing Company expect to gather 16,009 cases of apples this season. Oddfellows.

The conference of the Manchester unity of Oddfellows opens in Levin today. Delegates from the Wairarapa will include Bros. D. I>. Loasby am! F. Dennes (Greytown), and S. V. Gooding Flower Show.

The competitions nt tho Carterton flower show were won as under:—Cake, Mrs. Swan; shawl, Mrs. George War rington; weight of lamb, filflb, Messrs. A. A. Ball, N. V. Goodin, F. £. Tvlar and Mrs. C. Goodin guessed the "correct weight and took a quarter each. P. and A. Society. The general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society met on Saturday. at Carterton, Mr. M. McLeod, president, in the chair. The treasurer reported bank overdraft £14)30 12s fid, plus deposit £l9OO, total £2;i.;u 12s (id. Receipts for the mounth amounted co £164 16s lid. Accounts totalling £155 8s 8d were passed for payment. Two resignations were accepted. Mr. M. McLeod was appointed the society’s delegate to the annual conference of the Royal Agricultural Society next month. The Wairarapa Rugby Union wrota agreeing to the terms of the new lease of the showgrounds for five years, with the exception of clause 13, "which had been left with their secretary to arrange with the society’s committee. It was decided to communicate with the Masterton Association with regard to a 'lisplay in a Wairarapa Court at the Wellington Winter Show, Messrs. W Howard Booth and G. E. Allen being appointed to aet for the society. It was reported that the quarter-acre section purchased in Kent Street had been fenced and let at 6d per week, which did not cover the rates. A rule is to be added to the society’s regulations giving power to eject undesirables from tho society’s grounds. It was decided that there be three prizes in the hogget sheep classes for the Jubilee Show as under: First £4, second £2 10s, third £1 10s. It was decided, with Mr R Cooper’s approval, to allot his chailenge cup to the champion pony. FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) The Featherston Bifle Club fired a musketry course on Saturday. Following are the results:—L. G. Benton, 25. 27, 12, 18, 101; S. Benton, 23, 15, 29, 9, 15, 91; E. O’Neale, 22, 17, 23, 12, 15. 89; R. Benton, 21, 10, 32, 9. 16, 88- B. In the final for the senior championship rose bowl in the Featherston Croquet Club’s competition, Mrs. Fairbrother lost to Mrs. Wiekens. The Greytown Club will be entertained bv the Featherston Club on Wednesday.

ALFBEDTON. (‘‘The Age” Special.) * On Wednesday evening last tho settlers of the Alfredton district tendered Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Cross and family a farewell social, Mr. Cross having sold his farm, and is leaving the district. During the evening Mr. D. Parsonson, in the absence of Mr. M. R. Herbert made the presentation and referred to Mr. Cross’s activities on public bodies. He was always willing to help in any object of local interest which stood for the advancement of the district. The speaker also referred to the long association of the Cross family with Alfredton. When Mr. Cross severed his connection it would be the first time for 60 years that Alfredton would be without a representative of the family. Mr. Parsonson then presented Mr. and Mrs. Cross with a leather suit case and travelling rug respectively, and Miss Nancy Cross with a handbag. The two children also received mementoes. Mr. Cross briefly replied. After tho singing of ‘‘For They are Jolly Good Fellows,” hearty cheers were given for tho recipients and dancing was resumed. Mrs. Milne, the local teacher, has received an appointment at Wellington South School, and will be leaving shortly to take up her duties. Mrs. R. Low, junr., is an inmate of the Tararua Private Hospital, Pahiatua.
