MENTAL DEFECTIVES.
NEW HOME AT MANUKAU. IDEAL SITE PURCHASED. AUCKLAND, March 11. An area of 650 acres of land in the Karaka district, near the Manukau foreshore, has been acquired under the Public Works Act as a site for a new mental hospital. The new site is situated nine miles to the west of Drury and five miles from Paerata and is about seven miles in a direct line from Weymouth. The site is serveG with metalled roads and the Whatapaka inlet will provide communication by water right up to the boundary of the property. The area secured is described as excellent farming land, a portion being very rich swamp which will be suitable for market gardening. It is proposed to erect a large general mental hospital to accommodate about one thousand patients, this extension being necessary to relieve the present congestion at (P.A.).
