A DRAMATIC APPEAL
SUPPORT AGAINST RIOTERS IN CHINA. AN ENTERPRISING DESTROYER. ACTION WITHOUT ORDERS. (Received Friday, 7 p.m.) SHANGHAI, March 10. “We cannot hold out much longer; essential to send help,’’ was the dramatic message signalled fro:|i the British warship Wolsey during the rioting at Wuku on Wednesday. The message was picked up by the destroyer Emerald, stationed at Nanking.
Instead of relaying the appeal to Shanghai and awaiting the Admiral’s orders, the Emerald acted on her own initiative and signalled the Admiral: “Proceeding to Wuhu immediately,” and was already on the way when the Admiral’s orders supporting her action reached Nanking. It appears that the Wolsey landed a party to protect the evacuation of women and children and was then forced to land another body to subdue rioting. The rioters, realising the smallness of the Wolsey's forces, stoned the sailors. Apparently the trouble later died down.—(A. ami N.Z.)
