SUCCESSFUL NIGHT MEETING. MARKED PROGRESS IN AMATEUR CODE. (“The Age” Special.) The Carterton Amateur Athletic Club’s electric light meeting was held at the Carterton Showgrounds last night before an attendance of about 2000 people. The weather was threatening, but save for a brief drizzle, the conditions remained favourable throughout the evening. Considering that the club was only formed late in the season, the management of the meeting was good. With the assistance of a number of Wellington officials, who accompanied the cityathletes, the events were got off promptly until half way through the programme, when an unfortunate misunderstanding between two officials resulted in one of the cycle races being called off. From this point the meeting was inclined to flrag and it finished up over half an hour behind schedule time.
Local runners and cyclists were faced with strong opposition from Wellington, but the handicaps of the visitors rather flattered their ability, with the result that they enjoyed very moderate success, the handicap men taking most of the events. The Wellington cyclists were faced with a hopeless task, while in the flat events, the only first decision going to a city performer was the 440 yards handicap which was won by the ’Varsity athlete, C. B. Allan. One of the best events of the night was the mile, in which R. A. Rose, conceding big starts, was successful in defeating Priestley by a comfortable margin. Apart from the above mentioned delay the meeting was well controlled by the Carterton officials who deserve support and commendation for the manner in which they are fostering amateur 'Sport.
