EMPIRE AIRSHIPS.
PROGRESS UNDER DIFFICULTIES.
(Received Wednesday, 5.5 p.m.) F, LONDON, March 8. The difficulty of finalising plans for the trans-Empire airship scheme are revealed by the Auditor-General’s disclosure that £14,800 was paid as compensation to the framework contractors. The Air Ministry in January, 1926, placed, without calling for tenders, a premature contract on the basis of the actual cost of labour and materials, plus charges. The airship was to be completed by December, 1926, but at that date, progress was small, due to the Ministry’s difficulties in supplying the technical information. The firm applied for compensation, to which the Treasury assented, simultaneously extending the date for completion to the end of 1927.—(A. and N.Z.)
