“IS IT BRITISH?”

POWER BOARD MEMBER’S APPEAL. PUBCHASE OF A TRUCK. “£lOO,OOO a day is what Britain has to pay America fpr 62 years to pay off war debts. Every purchase from Britain helps to lighten the load. Ack before you buy, ‘ls it British.’! ” Brandishing before him a pamphlet bearing this inscription, Mr. W. A. Tate, a staunch sponsor for British goods, pleaded for support at yesterday’s meeting of the Wairarapa Power Board when the purchase of a new motor truck was being discussed. The Secretary-Manager stated that the board required a light truck, high geared, and capable of fair speed to enable gangs of men to be carried around the district quickly. The English truck which the board already had was hardly satisfactory, which was the experience of many other boards using similar trucks. He was keen to cany out the board’s policy of buying British goods wherever but in this instance none of the representath es of British motor firms could produce exactly what the board required. On the other hand, an American truck had been offered and was found to bo ideal for the work to be done.

Mr. Tate suggested that the authorities concerned should be ndvised that the British article, while of the right quality, was unsuitable for certain requirements, and at his request the matter was delayed for a month in order that further inquiries might be made.
