MASTERTON COMPETITIONS.

THE 1927 FESTIVAL. MANY NEW FEATURES. The syllabus and book of words for the 1927 festival of the Masterton Competitions Society has been widely distributed and present indications promise a record gathering. The competitions will be held from May 16 to 21, during the school vacation, and entries close on April 30. The dancing section has been increased and includes the popular national dances. Good entries are expected from the best exponents of the art. The popular Maori poi and canoe dances will be attractive. In order to further encourage local entries in the elocutionary section, special classes have been added for Wairarapa boys and girls, which should meet with approval and be well supported. The best of the Wellington talent is assured in the open classes. A Maori quartette has been added to the vocal section and should prove a very pleasing item. A further attraction this year is a Boomerang mouth-organ contest. This is an innovation for New Zealand competitions, and if the success and popularity of similar contests in Australia is any criterion, it should prove a big draw. The audience will be surprised at the sweetness and variety of tone which it is possible to produce from this little instrument. The medals to be awarded are on view in Mr. H. E. Pither’s window and are attracting a good deal of attention. Cash prizes are also given.

The syllabus and book of words is obtainable frofrn all book shops (free) or from the secretary, Mr. E. Bell, c/o The Huia Aerated Water Co., Ltd., Bannister street (postal address, box 20, Masterton).
