AMATEUR ATHLETICS AT NAPIER.

SUCCESS OF LOCAL COMPETITORS ROBE AND OAKLEY IN FORM. NAPIER, March 5. Several visiting athletes and cyclists pf note competed at tho sports meeting in Napier this afternoon and put up creditable performances. R. A. Rose, the champion runner frem Masterton, had little serious opposition in the two mile flat and this, added to the fact that a fairly strong wind prevailed, made the conditions unsatisfactory for record breaking. Rose appeared again in the mile handicap, which he won after a good last lap, in which Whimp (Hastings) made the champion exert himself over the last hundred yards.

Grose (Canterbury) won a heat in the half-mile cycle but was unplaced in the final. Grose discontinued after half the distance of the two mile event had been covered and left T. Oakley (Masterton) to win fairly comfortably from local competitors. The three mile cyclo handicap was an interesting race. Grose and Oakley, both on scratch, after catching tho leaders, allowed Sutton to pace them until entering the last lap. Then the champions went away with a great turn of speed, Oakley a length in the lead. The Masterton man looked as though he would leave even Grose well behind, but the lattle had something in reserve also and; made Oakklcy go to win by little over a length.

One of the attractions of the afternoon was the face in which Eastwood (Wellington) ran 440 yards against & local ladies’ relay team. Mere man was not disgraced by finishing a couple of yards behind the girl -who took the. last JlO yards. Each lady took Eastwood along at a fine pace and the event greatly interested tho large gathering of spectators. The principal results are as follow:— .

Two mile handicap.—Randolph Rose (Masterton) scr. 1, A. W. Mitchell (Napier) 250yds. 2, Keats (Masterton) 230yds. 3. Time 9.42 1-5.

Two miles wheel handicap.—T. Oakley (Masterton) scr., 1; A. C. Sutton (Napier) 160yds., 2; H. Tulford (Napier) 380yds., 3. Time 5.0 3-5. Three mile cycle handcap.—T. Oakley (Masterton) scr., 1; Grose (Canterbury) scr., 2; A. C. Sutton (Napier) 180yds., 3. Time 7.56.

One mile flat handicap.—Rose (Masterton) scr., 1; J. Whimp (Hastings) 2; Keats (Masterton) 3. Time 4.37. — (P.A.)
