MIGRATION PROBLEMS.

COUNCIL OF WOMEN DISCUSSION REFORMS SOUGHT. ' CHRISTCHURCH, March 2. The following remit, dealing with miragtion, was carried at a. conference to-day of the national council of women: “That this council is of the opinion that a. whole, increased population of a healthy and suitable type is necessary for the advancement of New Zealand and the Government should not urge increased immigration without making provision to absorb the immigrants by adequate housing and suitable employment.” The mover, Miss Hull, of Christchurch, said it was necessary to urge the Government to make adequate provision for immigrants. They should not be induced to come out in a haphazard way without knowing the conditions which existed. Many migrants thought they were coming to a land flowing with milk and honey. Miss England (Wellington) said that the point was to make sure the immigrants were the right type. Miss Dowing (Dunedin) said that if the immigrants were not of the right type they were still citizens of the British Empire, and New Zealand, being part of that Empire, should be prepared to take them (cries of “No!”).

Other remits carried were: “That the Government be urged to pass an Order in Council under the Child Welfare Act to regulate and restrict the attendance of children, at places of amusement.”

“That the Government be urged to consider measures for the better protection of British films.”

“That the council deplores that the cost of primary products, such as butter, milk, fruit and vegetables is beyond the means Of a large proportion of the public and that the cause of this high cost be investigated.” ‘ 4 That the council, regarding the habit of smoking as a growing evil among the youth of New Zealand, appeals to the Government to prohibit the sale of tobacco to persons under eighteen years. of age.” (Carried by fifteen votes to fourteen). —-(P.A.).
