FEWER BURSARIES GRANTED. DUNEDIN, March. 1. For many years it has been the custom of the Education Department to grant bursaries to home science students on recommendation. This year there are 29 applications. Oon Monday intimation was received that owing to. the large number of bursaries granted last year only 10 would be granted this year. So far no application sent forward by the University Council had been refused, so that when it appe.r rd that the number of students was ioe great for the present hostel the council leased Sir James Allen’s house, spent a considerable sum i_ equipping it, and appointed additional staff. Moreover, the students were to. be in Dunedin from all over the Dominion next Friday andthe large majority of those turned down must have received notice ot the refusal of the bursary on the evo of their departure. —(P.A.).
