LOCAL BODY BORROWING.
NEW CONTROL BOARD. APPOINTMENT’ OF MEMBERS. The personnel of the Local Government Loans Board, set up under the legislation of last session to control the borrowing powers of local authorities, was announced yesterday by the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Downie Stewart).
Under the legislation passed last session, the board is constituted as follows:—(1) The officers for the time being holding in the Public Service the offices of the Secretary to the Treasury and the Enginecr-in-Chief of the Public Works Department; (2) five other persons to be appointed by the GovernorGeneral.
With respect to (2), the GovernorGeneral has appointed the following:— R. A. Anderson, Esq., of Invercargill. G. C. Godfrey, Esq., of Wellington. W. J. Holdsworth, Esq., of Auckland.
G. A. Lewin, Esq., pf Dunedia. 8. A. R. Mair, Esq., of Hunterville. These latter appointments will be for a period of one year from April J, 1927.
The chairman of the board will be Mr. R. E. Hayes Secretary to tho Treasury.
The Loeal Government Loans Board Act comes into operation on April 1 next, and it is intended t<r assemble the board immediately in order to decide on formal procedure, so that there will be uo delay in dealing with loeal authority applications. Mr. R. A. Anderson is a well-known business man of Invereargill, and is tho present manager of J. G. Ward and Co., Ltd. His local body experience comprises the chairmanship of the Southland High School Board of Governors up to 1924, member of Southland Power Board for three years; also l the chairman of the Bluff Harbour Board from -1909 to 1913. At present he is one of the Government’s nominees on the latter board.
Mr. G. C. Godfrey was assistant Un-der-Secrctary in the Public Works Department until 1923. He was one of the original members of the Main Highways Board, and is now permanent head of the Marine Department. Mr. G. A. Lewin is Town Clerk of Dunedin City. He has had long experience in loeal body matters, and is looked upon as an authority of local body finance.
Mr W. J. Holdsworth is a well-known, merchant of Auckland. Formerly he was Mayor of Grey Lynn for a number of years, and was also a member of the Auckland City Council. At present he is chairman of the Auckland Electric Power Board.
Mr. S. A. R. Mair is engineer to tho Rangitikei County Council. He is past president of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers. He is also member of the Engineers Registration Board.
