DUAL CUP WINNER.
SPEARFELT A TRUE STAYER. WINS AUSTRALIAN CUP. < (Received Tuesday, 5.58 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 1. Following is the result of the Australian Cup, 2J miles:— SPEARFELT 1 Noas 2 Pantheon 3 —(P.A.) (It is a coincidence that tho above three horses finished in the same order in the last Melbourne Cup. The win has a distinct New Zealand flavour, Bpearfelt being trained, and formerly partly-owned, by Vincent O’Neil, tho New Zealander, who formerly resided in Masterton, while Naos, the second horse, is New Zealand bred.) LAST OF THE MARTIANS. MR. MCDONALD’S COLT SOLD. The sale was reported yesterday of AIH. A. McDonald's Martian colt to Mr F. C. Jolly, of Adelaide. Sc-mth Australia. This youngster was the talk of the rcently-inaugurated yearling thoroughbred sales, the first of which was heel at Trentham last month, when the colt was put up for auction and passed in to the bid of an Australian buyer at 800 guineas. From Kildee, an own sister to Hcmgbird, a brilliant performer who traces back to the famous The Tetrarch the colt caught the eye of many good judges who found it difficult to fault him. He is the only Martian of his age in Australia or New Zealand, and may yet prove to be the last male descendant of this famous line. No price was stated, but it is believed that the figure was well in advance of the Trentham reserve, as Mr. McDomald held a high opinion of the colt. He will be put into work in J. Lowe’s stable at Trentham, prior to shipping him for his new home in South Australia. .The sale was effected through the trgency of Wright, Stephenson and Co.
