BY TEN WICKETS

WELLINGTON TEAM DEFEATED. SUPERIOR ABILITY. MELBOURNE ATTACK PREDOMINATES. WELLINGTON, February 28.' The superiority of Australian cricketing ability over that of New Zealand was again demonstrated at the Basin Reserve to-day when the visiting Melbourne Club team decesively outplayed tho Wellington representative eleven by ten wickets. Able howling by Vernon Ransford saw Wellington fall in their second innings for 214 runs, leaving the visitors 81 to get to win, a task Hendry and Sandford easily accomplished. Heavy rain on Saturday night and Sunday had thorqughly saturated the pitch which was drying under the influence of a bright sun and light southerly. W. Armstrong was missing from. the-Melbourne side, nursing an injured leg, and Dakin fielded sub, Ransford leading the side. Tho bright feature cf the innings was Badeock’s forceful display for forty, which included four fours. The innings which lasted 196 minutes closed for 214. Tho batting was better than on Friday when only 300 runs were scored for the whole day’s batting on a good wicket. The Australian fielding was very moderate. Dakin did useful work.

Requiring 81 runs to win Hendry and Sandford opened Melbourne’s innings and reached the winning total in 67 minutes. Details:— WELLINGTON. First Innings .. • i .. .. 300
