MELBOURNE MAKE 434. BRILLIANT CENTURY BY HENDRY. “TAIL” WAGS TO GOOD PURPOSE. WELLINGTON, February 26. At 11.7 a.m. Jewell and Campbell resumed the Melbourne team’s first innings with no wickets down for 8 runs. Kortlang was missing from the Wellington side, Airey fielding in his place. Fifty came up in 34 minutes and at 74 lErice replaced Badcock whose eleven overs had cost 27 runs. Jewell reached his half century in 107 minutes. Lambert brought Foley, up to silly midoff and Jewell, who had been at the wickets for just upoh two hours, fell into tho trap right away, popping one into Foley’s hands. He had assisted Johnstone to add 62 for the third wicket. After lunch Ennsford was given an ovation on appearing, but went first ball, being clean bowled by Brice, 197—5—0. Saudford played a dashing innings for G2 which included seven fours. He was at the wickets for 77 minutes, 230—6—62. Wood, a left hander, joined Hendry and was neatly taken behind the wickets by James off McGirr. 245—7—10. A burst of cheering greeted Warwick Armstrong. The position was exciting as Melbourne required 55 runs w’ith only three wickets in hand. Hendry reached 50 in 81 minutes and passed Wei-' Jtngton’s total by banging Brice past cover to the fence. The 300 had taken 257 minutes. At 357, W. Armstrong, who had been at the wickets for 74 minutes for 47, was clean bowled by Badcock. For a man who has not played for two years he gave an exhilarating display. He hit five fours and assisted Hendry to add 112 for tho eighth wicket wlym runs were wanted. T. Armstrong and Hendry put on <79 for the ninth wicket. The innings closed far 434. The Wellington bowling was steady during the morning and right up until the Wellington score had been past. It the> tired and Hendry tfounaed it soundly. The fielding also fell off lute in the afternoon, when signs df weariness were apparent, ‘theugft Badcock and Lamison kept going to the bitter end.
