L.Mauder (L.) 10,418 SIXTH SOCIALIST GAIN PRESS COMMENTS ON THE VOTING. (Received Friday, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 25. The result of the Stourbridge byelection making the sixth Socialist gain since the general election, evokes intriguing Press Comments. The “Morning Post” admits that the Conservatives lost by a substantial turnover of about three thousand votes and says it is inclined to give first place in the causes to economic discontent.

The “Daily Telegraph” and “Daily Express” are silent except for publishing the result. The “Daily Chronicle” describes the Government defeat as a crushing political one. It “The Stourbridge figures are a stagger for the Government. Such a reverse was not even previously hinted at. The Liberals, however, are not surprised. The immediate effect will be to revise an intrigue among the Conservatives for the reconstruction of the Cabinet. The slogan wilj be * clear out the Reds.’ If that is not achieved, it will be a rallying cry at; the next general election.” The 4 .‘Daily News” finds in the election argument for porportional representation, 1 pointing out that while 16,561 voteil for the Labourite, twentythree thousand Conservatives and Liberals voted against him. The “Daily Herald” naturally regards the result as a symptom of the next general election. It says “The isooner Mr. Baldwin resigns the better for the country.”—(A. and N.Z.)
