UNIVERSITY ESSAYS.
VERY POOR STANDARD SET. AUCKLAND, February 24. Because of the dearth of entries for the University essay prizes, the New Zealand University Council decided to- I day that the whole question of the I prizes be referred to the Academic ’ Board for investigation and report, i Mr. F. Milner, rector of the Waitaki i High School, said he was astounded at thq. dearth of candidates, and th£ low I quality of the essays. He considered there was a certain obligation on I
schools of history and social science ] to inspire students with eagerness and enthusiasm to compete. His experience as a judge was that many of the I essays were not above the sixth, form standard.—(P.A.).
