TIMBAR TARIFFS.
POSITION IN AUSTRALIA. INCREASE OPPOSED. MELBOURNE 1 , February 24. Opposing the application for an increased tariff on imported timbers before the Tariff Board, Air Heath (manager of Saxton and Sons), one of the leading timber merchants in Sydney, said that he objected to the proposed increase of duty because Australia could not supply all her requirements. With the economic chaos reigning throughout the trade, in both Australian and foreign timbers, any further duty would only do harm. There was a huge over-capitalisation in the timber trade brought about through failure to make adjustments in the postwar period.—(P.A.).
