RIVER POLLUTION.

REPORT BY BOROUGH ENGINEER.

Commenting on a letter which appeared in the “Age” yesterday regarding river pollution allegedly by the effluent from the Borough sewerage works, the engineer informed the council last evening that he inspected the locality yesterday and found that the pollution referred to was an organic decomposition which could be £ound in any river at this time of the year, and was not from tho septic tanks. Unfortunately the ta'nks had been erected on the wrong class of land, which gave little filtration, but they were working as well now as ever the’y eould be expected to work. Sample tests, taken from tho river both above and below the outfall from the tanks, returned satisfactory results on analysis.
