UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
SCHOLARSHIP FINANCE. AUCKLAND, February 22. The sittings of the Council of the University of New Zealand weer continued to-day. The Chancellor (Professor J. Macmillan Brown) presiding. The Finance Committee recommended that the Government should be asked to increase the value of University National Scholarships from £2O to £25, and the boarding allowance from £3O to £35. The committee reported that a very large increase in revenue during recent years, derived from examination fees, had enabled the University to transfer substantial sums from the General Account to tho Scholarship Account. This building up of the capital of the Scholarship Account had been very valuable, and it would bo desirable if it could be continued until the interest from that capital was sufficient to provide for scholarship payments. It was therefore recommended that tho Government should be asked to provide a further statutory grant of £2500 per annum.
A motion was carried that the University Entrance Board should bo requested to consider tho whole subject of matriculation and the entrance scholarship examination with reference to: (1) standard, (2) syllabus, (3) system of marking, (4) accrediting by means of leaving certificates, and to forward their recommendations to the council through the Academic Board. The question whether the council should be empowered to grant degrees in theology was referred to a committee for report. Dr. W. E. Collins was appointed treasurer.—(P.A.).
