MASTERTON CLUB’S CARNIVAL. GREAT SUCCESS DESPITE BAD WEATHER. The result was one of the most successful carnivals ever held in the district, and both swimmers and the club may be congratulated on their achievement. The big attraction was the appearance of J. Considerable enthusiasm was displayed in face of the unseasonable weather conditions in the displays of life saving given to Afasterton school children yesterday by the members of the Maranui Surf and Life Saving Club. The members of the team arrived by the afternoon express from the north and appeared first at the West School baths, where the children of that schdol and also of St. Matthew’s School for Girls, were assembled. The visitors were introduced by Air. W. 8. L. Dickson (president of the Afasterton Club), who referred to the sportsmanship of the Maranui team, in fulfilling their promise in spite of the cold and wet weather.
Under the direction of the manager (Afr. Chapman), Afessrs Afurrell, Eversleigh, Clarke, Alexander, Claridge, and Raven demonstrated the approved methods of rescue of the drowing, and release, both on land and in the water, while exhibitions of the various strokes employed in modern swimming proved most instructive. The visitors were 1 thanked by Afr. H. Afiller, who expressed the opinion that much good would result from the team’s activities during their stay in Afasterton. Later in the afternoon the same display w T as given at the Dixon Street baths where some 800 pupils from adjacent schools were assembled. Con siderable enthusiasm was displayed by the onlookers, and judging by the interest taken in the work of the visiting swimmers, their exhibitions should prove of great value in spreading niucli needed knowledge of the methods used in the rescue of the drowning.
The Alaranui swimmers return to Wellington to-day.
