SURFING SENSATION.
ON NORTH AUCKLAND BEACH A PLUCKY RESCUE. WHANGABEI, February 21. A sensational surfing accident occurred at the Raukaka Beach on Saturday afternoon, when six persons were in danger for upwards of an hour. Two girls, Winnie McMillan, aged* 14, and Mamie Graham, aged 15, got into difficulties at an isolated and dangerous spot. The four young men who attempted to rescue them were also quickly in trouble, and another young man, who procured a rope, succeeded after a plucky endeavour in bringing Winnie McMillan and one of the men to safety. A rowboat was eventually found a mile distant, and was manned by two men, who rescued the other four persons. The girl Graham was in a state of extreme exhaustion. The anxiety of the spectators was intensified by the knowledge that the locality is usually infested by sharks at this season. of the year. —(P.A.).
