FIRE AT FEILDING.
BIG GUTTER FACTORY SAVED. PALMERSTON N., February 21. The Cheltenham Dairy Company’s Maki no butter factory, the largest in the Wellington province, had a narrow escape from destruction by fir(? early on Sunday morning, when a store and dwelling next door were completely burnt. Only the absence of wind saved the big factory, which is supplied by over eight hundred farmers. The water pressure at Makino, which is two miles from Feilding, is very poor, and this handicapped the brigade in its efforts to prevent the spread of the fire. When discovered a few minutes after 1 a.m., both the store and residence were ablaze, and nothing could be done to save them ot their contents. The efforts of the firemen and a bucket brigade were concentrated on saving the butter factory, the woodwork of which was alight in several places. The shop and house were occupied by Mr. D. .0. McElroy, who, with his wife, was staying at the seaside. When Mr. and Mrs. .McElroy saw the scene of destruction on Sunday afternoon, both collapsed, and Mr. McElroy’s condition last evening was not at all satisfatcory.—(P.A.)
