SOUTH WAIRARAPA ITEMS.
(“The Age” Special.) The Carterton Horticultural Society has included a new class for farmers' root crops in the schedule for its autumn show, to be held on March 11. Rifle Shooting. The Greytown Defence Rifle Club will fire a practice match this afternoon at ranges 600 yards (15 shots) and 700 yards (10 shots). There will be ammunition prizes for scores reaching 104 or over. The members of the Greytown Volunteer Fire Brigade presented Lieutenant J. Wood with a salad bowl and crystal set to mark the occasion of his recent marriage. Farmers’ Union.
At the last meeting of the Greytown branch of the Farmers’ Union, the duty charged on oil and gas engines was discussed. It was pointed out that while electric motors were admitted free, users of other kinds of engines had to pay a duty of 15 per cent., and the branch decided to raise an objection to the differential duty.
Tar Sealing. The Featherston Borough Council road staff are at present engaged in tar sealing the main street. River Board. .
At a meeting of the Waiohine River Board notice was given by way of special order that a rate of threepence in the £1 on the annual value be struck for the ensuing year. At the request of the Ahiaktruka River Board it was decided to proceed with the repair of a groyne at Cabbage Tree Point. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr. A. Murray in his illness.
FEATHERSTON. (“The Age” Special.) A meeting of those interested in the formation of the Featherston amateur swimming club was held on Monday night, and the following committee appointed: Messrs. Burt, McDonald and Adams, Misses R. Card, A. Tulloch and E. Bary. Miss E. Townsend was appointed honorary secretary. It was decided to hold a swimming carnival in the baths on Saturday, February 26. Croquet.
On Thursday afternoon a friendly match was played between members of the Carterton and Featherston Croquet Clubs at Featherston, tho results of the games being as follows: Mesdames Feast and' Sorenson lost to Mesdames Fairbrother and Combs; Mesdames Gay for and Hawker lost to Mesdames Williams and Rowles. A return match will be played on Wednesday.
Plunket-Karitf.ne Appeal. The secretary of the Featherston branch of the Plunket Society wishes to acknowledge with thanks a donation of £2OO by Mr. I). 13. S. Riddiford, io the Plunket-Kartane appeal fund. This together with Mrs. Riddiford’s donation of a similar amount, makes the Featherston contribution to date over £4OO. ■ Perse nal,
Mr. D. C. Ki-Hdcwhi'te, manager oi the hvul branch of the Bank of Australasia, is .speeding a holiday in Wellington. He is accompanied by Mrs. Kibblowhite and family. He is being relieved by Mr. Hunter.
Gift Acknowledged. The headmaster of the Featherston School acknowledges with thanks a present of three fine gramophone records from Mr. T. E. Lang.
Open Air Dance. A large number of jazz enthusiasts were present at a delightful open air dance given by the Haunui Croquet Club on Thursday evening. Cosy <-c-r--ners had been arranged around tho grounds with tree ferns and artificial flowers, while the lawn, where the dancing took place, were illuminated by coloured electric lights. Bridge was played in the adjoining gymnasium, which had also been tastefully decorated. .Supper was provided by the members of the club and music was supplied by Messrs. Smith, Burt and Nelson and Miss Andrews.
