AMOUNTING TO BRIBES.

SUBSCRIPTIONS OR GIFTS BY POLITICIANS.

PROHIBITION RECOMMENDED IN AUSTRALIA.

(Received Thursday, 1D.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 17. Among the recommendations of the Federal Electoral Commission is one debarring members of the Federal Parliament making any gifts or subscriptions to any individual or body of individuals such as sporting or charitable bodies. Such gifts, in the opinion of the Commission, amount to bribes, and should be prohibited. Another recommendation is that when a member of Parliament is attacked in a newspaper his reply should be given the same space and prominence as the article of attack. It also recommends the abolition of the signature to newspaper election articles and reports, and the extension of the electorate residential qualification to three months.—(P.A.)
