ELECTRICAL DISTURBANCE.
AUCKLAND TRAMCAR STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. WATERSPOUT AND CLOUDBURST. AUCKLAND, February 15. A tram car was struck by lightning during the height of a thunderstorm at Epsom to-night. The lightning travel-, led by the overhead wire down the pole of the car to the engine. A blinding 'flash followed. The motorman, William Tee. reeled back from the shock. He said afterwards it felt as if someone had dealt him a heavy Blow on the neck. He displayed great promptness in stopping the ear, in which no passengers were travelling at the time?. The hair at the back of his head was singed and he was suffering somewhat from shock. The car suffered no structural damage, but the lights fused and the engine was badly disabled. An electrical disturbance in the city and suburbs to-night was accompanied by a heavy downpour of rain, the streets being flooded. Something in the nature of a cloud burst was experienced at East Tamaki, preceded by a waterspout which wrecked a small outbuilding of a house and did other minor damage.—(P.A.)
