SOME NOTABLE HORSES.
MR. H. HASSALL’S IMPORTATIONS Amongst visiting exhibitors who have come to' Masterton for the Show are Messrs H. Hassall and F. B. Donnelly of Hawke’s Bay. Both are showing some notable horses. Mr. Hassall, who has just returned from an extended visit to England, has brought back with him several thoroughbreds of distinguished ancentry. One of these is the four-year-old stallion Gainscourt, by Gainsborough, out of Vantage. In England, Gainscourt won a race as a two-year-old, and was placed several times when he raced as a three-year-old. He then suffered an injury which put an end to his racing for the time. Mr. Hassall has brought him out to Hawke’s Bay as a stud sire. Mr. Hassall has entered two of his importations at the Masterton Show. One is a weight-carrying horse of the hunter type which was placed every time he was shown in England. Another is a five-year-old mare which was placed twice when racing as a four-year-old in point to point races in England, and took prizes at Richmond and Olympia. Mr. Donnelly’s entries are colonialbred thoroughbreds. Mr. Hassall’s slogan is that what is wanted in horse-breeding is blood. He maintains that there is still a good future for horse breeding In this country provided .high standards are maintained. He was supported by Mr. Donne,Uy in maintaining that a good market would be feund in India for all the really well-bred horses raised in this country. Both gentlemen were emphatic in declaring that Now Zealand could easily produce large numbers of thoroughbreds which, for purposes of export to India and in other respects, would more than hold their own with the best that Australia could turn out.
