CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING AT AUCKLAND. a T. OAKLEY WINS MILE CYCLE RACE. SEVERAL RECORDS BROKEN. Good contests and close finishes were witnessed in a numiber of events on the concluding day of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Championship meeting at Auckland on Saturday. In several cases existing records were equalled or broken. The one mile cycle championship was won by T. Oakley. AUCKLAND, February 12. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic championships concluded to-day. Results:— 100 yards championship.—Leadbetter (Canterbury), 1; Williams (Auckland), 2; Elh'ott (Auckland), 3. The last burst saw the title-holder irresistible ind he won by one yard, six-inches se-
parating the second and third. Fleming was close up fourth. Leadbotter’s time, 9 4-ssecs., equalled the Australasian record. 220 yards championship.—Leadbetter (Canterbury), 1; Fleming (Wellington), 2; Elliott (Auckland), 3. Also started: Williams (Auckland), Johnston (Canterbury). Leadbetter won by half a yard. Elliott was six inches away third. Time, 22 3-ssecs. 440 yards championship.—Fleming (Wellington), 1; Newton (WanganuiTaranaki), 2; Garlick (Auckland), 3. Also started: Henry and McCoy (Auckland), Maitland and Gilmour (Wanga-nui-Taranaki), Eastwood and Smith (Wellington),.Laing (Canterbury), Olsen (Otago). ; Fleming won by three yards from Newton. Time, 50 secs., the best performance by a New Zealander.
Half mile championship.—Olsen (Otago), 1; Newton (Wanganui-Tara-naki), 2; AllUn (Wellington), 3. Also started: Kells, Griffin and Leikis (Auckland); Gilmour (Wanganui-Tara-naki); Scotney and Gully (Wellington); Laing (Canterbury). Olsen won by two yards from Newton, Allan being one yard away third. Time, lmin 59 sees. A SENSATIONAL INCIDENT. One mile championship.—Savidan (Auckland), 1; Priestley (Wellington) 2. Also started: Gibbons (WanganuiTaranaki), Do,novan (Auckland). The finish was sensational. Fifteen yards from the tape, Savidan was inches to the good and very close to Gibbons, who was on the inside. The Wanganui champion accidentally collided with Savidan and the Aucklander stumbled ten yards from the tape. He kept on his feet just long enough to pass the tape and then pitched forward. Gibbons won by nearly three yards and was as the winner. Tho bumping was investigated by the referee, Mr. R. AV. McVilly, who disqualified Gibbens and placed Savidan first and Priestly third. Gibbons’s time was 4mins. 25sees.
120 3 yards hurdles championship.— Lander (Otago), 1; Shirley (Auckland), 2: Broad (Wanganui-Taranaki), 3. Lander won by six yards from Broad, who beat Shirley in a sprint to the tape. However, Shirley received the second award. Time, 15 l-ssecs., equalling the Australian and New Zealand record.
440 yards hurdles championship.— Garlick (Auckland), 1; Vangioni (Wellington), 2; Nesdale (Auckland), 3. Also started: Murray (Auckland), Broad and Darby (Wanganui-Taranaki), Lander (Otago). Garlick beat Vangioni by one yard. Nesdale was eight yards away, and inches in front of Darby. Time, 58secs., a New Zealand record. One mile walking championship.—Cabot (Otago), 1; Lankey (Wellington), 2; Clarkson (Auckland), tho only other starter was disqualified. Cabot won as he liked by ten yards. Time, Cmins. 39secs. 100 yards ladies’ championship.— Miss Manton (Wellington), 1; Miss I’. Swinburne (Wellington), 2; Miss Eastwood (Gisborne), 3. Also started: Misses Dick (Auckland), Porter (Wellington), Collins (Wellington), Gill (Wellington). This wae a stirring race, Miss Manton holding on to win by one foot in the recortl time of 11 3-ssecs., 1-5 of a second better than the previous record. Miss Eastwood was a foot away third.
Ladies’ 75 yards invitation scratch race.—Miss Manton (Wellington), 1; Miss Eastwood (Gisborne), 2; Miss Swinburne (Wellington), 3. Won by a foot. Time, 8 4f-ssecs. Pole vault championship.—Batstons (Canterbury), 10ft. Sins., 1; Sutherland (Wellington), 10ft., 2. Throwing 16 pound hammer championship.—Harvey (Wellington), 142 ft. 1; Hunt (Wanganui-Taranaki), 126 ft., 2,
Running high jump championship. — Shirley (Auckland), sft. 9£ins., 1; Sutherland (Wellington), sft. Sins., 2; Kalaugher (Wellington), sft. flins., 3.» Running hop 1 step and' jump championship.—Shirley (Auckland), 47ft. 4Jins., (New Zealand record), 1; Sutherland (Wellington}, 45ft. 3ins., 2; Kalaugher (Wellington), 44ft. 7|ins., 3. Throwing the: discus championship.— Hunt (Wanganui-Taranaki) 119 ft lin., 1; Sutherland (Wellington) 108 ft. IJin., 2; Shirley (Auckland), 96ft. lOJins., 3. CYCLE RACES. Half-mile cycle championship.—Lamb (Victoria), 1; Grose (Canterbury), 2; Flett (Wellington), 3; lanson (Canterbury), 4. Also started: Nicholson (Otago), Oakley (Wellington), Ferguson (Canterbury). The Victorian won by half a length from Grose, the third man two lengths away, and lanson four lengths further back. Time, lmin. 59 secs. One mile cycle championship.—Oak ley (Wellington), 1; Byrnes (Auck-
land), 2; Douglas (Auckland), ,3. Also started: Lamb (Victoria), Flett (Wellington), Grose (Canterbury), Ferguson (Canterbury). What would, have been an excellent race was marred by an accident at the entrance to the straight on the last lap, as a result of which Grose, Flett, lanson and Ferguson fell, the last-named faring worst; He was badly shaken, but recovered after attention on thfe ground. Grose also was winded, but Flett and Ferguson were not hurt. When the mishapoccurred, Grose was coming up with a splendid burst in pursuit of Byrnes*, who led into the straight from the back stretch. Suddenly Grose fell, and lanson, Ferguson and Flett were brought down. Byrnes maintained His advantage until, near the line, Oakley challenged and won by inches Douglas was three lengths further back, and then came Lamb, who was deprived: of any winning chance by the mishap. Time, 2mins 32 2-ssecs» Three mile cycle championship.— Lamb (Victoria), 1; Oakley (Wellington), 2; Byrnes (Auckland) 3; Casey (Auckland), 4. These were the only starters. Lamb put in a great finish and won by a length Byrnes being very close. Time, Tmins; 49 2-ssocs . The final points scored for the interprovincial trophies are as follows:-— THE CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD. Championship Shield.— Wellington, 57; Auckland, 35; Canterbury, 20; Otago, 15; Wanganui-Taranaki, 15. Queensland Memorial Shield lor standards and records.—Auckland and Wellington tied with It points each, the shield going to Auckland, which secured most records. Ih the throe mile walking championship, Lankey. (Wellington), who finished first, was disqualified. Cabot (Otago), the titleholder, left the track in tho straight, evidently as a mark of protest ai Lankey’s liftings. Although. Cabot changed his mind, and, going back, to the track, finished the race, he kad broken the rules and no race was <l<Tlan><k—(P.A.).
