COUNTY AFFAIRS.

FEATHERSTON COUNCIL MEETS. REQUESTS AND COMPLAINTS. (“The Age” Special.) The ordinary monthly meeting of the Featherston County Council was held at Martinborough yesterday, there being present: Councillors Q. Donald (chairman), W. B. Martin (treasurer), 1). Cameron, J. C. Bid will. G. Gil ties, J. McLeod, J. Martin, J. Thompson and R. AV. Matthews. rphe treasurer reported receipts since last meeting, £4960 8s Id. Bank balances: County Fund, credit, £6039 Ils 7d; Loan Account, credit, £IJ)63 10s 9d; Imprest Account, credit, £2OO. Accounts amounting to £9857 12s 3d were passed for payment. H. Bonnett, an ex-employee of the crusher staff, wrote applying for a position on the permanent road staff.—Left in the hands of the chairman.

C. Stunnell, Papawai, wrote drawing attention to the state of Fabian’s Road. Owing to the pot-holes We had two springs of his milk-brake broken this season.—To be attended to. D. C. and L. J. Fairbrother, AVood Street, Greytown, wrote asking when the Council is going to metal the road to their property, also why a Moroa water race rate notice had been, sent to them. —The metalling to be left in the hands of the councillor for the riding. Regarding the rate notice, this matter is to be referred to the Moroa water race committee.

Mrs. K. Nix wrote objecting to being rated for a special water rate on her property as there is no race on that portion of the property. The amount claimed has been paid.—Referred to the water race committee.

Four ratepayers wrote asking for assistance towards work required in cleaning out the Big Drain. On inspeeing the work it was found that the bank on one side of the bridge had fallen in and filled the drain up and directed the water outside the floodgates. It is estimated that the work required would take about two weeks. —Resolved that the council attend to the work at the bridge, the settlers to clear the deposit further on.

The secretary of the Waiohine River Board wrote agreeing to repair a damaged groyne at Cabbage Tree Point provided that the three bodies interested pay a third each of the estimated cost. £4O.—Noted.

The Minister of Lands wrote regarding soldier settlers being in arrears with their rates. The payment of rates is a condition of the leases held* by settlers of Crown lands and failure to pay makes the holder liable to forfeiture. He asked for a list of those in ar rear so that they may be dealt with.—The clerk reported that the list had# been supplied. ■ , The Major-General commanding the New Zealand Military Forces, wrote regarding the water supply system at the Featherston Camp. Certain residents dn the vicinity whose houses are connected with the camp system have asked the department to continue the supply. This the department is prepared to do on certain conditions, provided that the Featherston County Council take over the system free of cost and administer same. In case of national emergency the department reserves the right to resume control. — Referred to the Featherston-Longwood water race committee.

AV. Smith, ranger for the eastern ridings, reported having impounded three head of stock and otherwise dealt with four; and J. Abbott, ranger for the western ridings, reported having dealt with 18 cattle and three horses.

For painting the workmen’s cottages at Morison’s Bush and Kahutara, five tenders were received, and that of Smith and Scott was accepted at. £2B. The matter of repairs to the Morison’s Bush cottage was left in the hands of Councillor Thompson.

Two tenders were received for metalling the AVoodside-Greytown Road, 600 yards, and that of Mr. Mulvaney at 4s 2d per yard was accepted. It was decided to obtain a price for painting the Kaiwaiwai workman’s cottage.

A resolution was passed authorising the affixing of the seal to the Wairarapa Courfties Joint By-laws and Health By-laws.

The clerk was instructed to take legal proceedings against lorry owners for overloading. Notice is to be given to the lessee of Lake Ferry Hotel to have the hotel premises painted in terms of the lease. A resolution was passed instructing the county solicitor to take the necessary steps to take over the contract at the Moroa water race headworks.

It was resolved that no plan be taken away from the office without being signed for, and that the signator be liable should the 'plan, be lost.
